conceptual design project (2023)

Project overview
LingualNut is an unique language learning app that combines education with environmental action. The app is designed to help users learn language from the ground up while contributing to tree planting initiatives. Unlike many existing language apps that dive straight into vocabulary and grammar, Lingualnut begins with foundational lessons, making it accessible for absolute beginners.

My contributions
Throughout this project, I contributed the research process, gathering user insights, and interviewing a bilingual translator. I developed and finalised an intuitive app layout.

Research

Competitive benchmarking (Language apps)

In order to have a better understanding the usability of language apps, I reviewed the usability of some language-learning platforms, mainly Duolingo. The objectives for this project were to:

  • Find the difference between language school course and language-learning app

  • Understand the convention we should follow

Charities' operation
As LingualNut is an app where people can plant a tree to help the Earth after finishing an achievement, I also reviewed the operation of different tree planting organisation.

Online survey
Next an online survey is conducted to better understand users behaviours, needs and goals. Gathering quantitive and qualitative data allowed me to determine:

  • The goals of people that people use platform or apps to learn a new language

  • What users are trying to achieve during their learning

  • If there are any pain points for users

  • How users think of having a chance to plant a tree by just learning on their phone

Findings:

While language apps are appreciated for their flexibility and affordability, there is a significant demand for more comprehensive practice opportunities, especially in speaking and grammar. Additionally, integrating language learning with meaningful causes like environmental action could enhance user engagement and motivation.

Interview
An interview had been conducted with a Canadian translator, Catherine, fluent in English, French and Spanish, currently learning German. Her feedback highlighted the need for more beginner-friendly content in language apps.

Mascot
With the decision to use a squirrel as the app's mascot, a choice made by one of my teammates. The squirrel, known for its strong connection to trees, perfectly aligns with our app's core concept of "learn and plant a tree." The mascot will serve as a constant companion to users, cheering them on and motivating continuous learning, reinforcing the environmental theme while creating a friendly and engaging user experience.

Design
After finalising the gamification with my teammate, I designed the prototype and layout to present when will users can plant a tree.
